Overview

 
The Cardiac Monitor Technician is responsible for ongoing high-level surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and provides nursing staff and other healthcare providers with information about the patient?s normal heart rhythm and immediate notification of any changes in the cardiac rhythms. The Cardiac Monitor Technician should have the knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the heart as well as various rhythms such as normal sinus, heart blocks; paced and lethal arrhythmias. In addition the Cardiac Monitor Technician should be able to interpret and measure rhythm strips by rate and EKG intervals.  Talent Pool: Allied Health

 

Responsibilities

 

 
Performs clerical and Cardiac Monitoring Activities. Enters patient information on the monitors and rhythm strips. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Observes screen of cardiac monitors and listens for alarms to identify abnormal variation in heart rhythms. Continuously provides surveillance, interpretation and measurements of cardiac rhythm. Accurately documents any changes in patients' rate & rhythm on the record/log. Informs nurse of variations that promote physical exam of patients. Escalates calls based on nursing response or patient change in condition.

Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills. Provides accurate hand off report at change of shift and PRN. Reports changes in patient's rate and rhythm immediately. Able to recognize the need to seek assistance and directs questions and problems to appropriate person. Follows chain of command when issues arise.

Demonstrates Personal accountability. Responds appropriately to emergency situations (Cone Health Codes) and demonstrates knowledge of how to respond. Always uses appropriate safety devices and techniques (examples: correctly lifting copy paper). Protects all confidential information and obeys all HIPAA regulations. Adheres to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, including dress code and attendance. Documents time accurately using Kronos. Completes all departmentally required education, competencies, and/or proficiencies.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent, Required

Successful completion of cardiac monitoring interpretation program preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of full-time cardiac monitoring interpretation experience OR Successful completion of cardiac monitoring interpretation program required.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED

PREFERRED

BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider

Cardiac Monitor Technician certification preferred.
