Overview

 
Performs a variety of duties relating to the patient and the environment, reporting observations to the patient?s Primary Nurse or Charge Nurse. Talent Pool: Nursing Support

 

Responsibilities

 

 
Performs direct patient care based on the requests and needs as specified by patient and family, being age appropriate.

* Assists the primary care nurse with the gathering of data for assessment purposes by obtaining vital signs and pulse oximetry, etc.

* Anticipates and prioritizes patient need. Assists the nurse/or physician with procedures, surgical preps, wound care, clean and sterile dressings, urinary catheterizations, staple and suture removal. Provides immediate treatment of injuries including immobilization, hemorrhage control and infection control.

* Set up procedural trays( i.e. suture, hand, dental)

* Responds appropriately in accordance to unit standards during an emergency situation by initiating and/or assisting in procedures prescribed by hospital policy, including CPR, IV insertion under the direct supervision of a nurse, defibrillation of life-threatening arrhythmia and documents all pertinent information for the patient?s medical records.

* Performs phlebotomy duties/POCT and ACCU Checks in accordance with unit and laboratory standards.

* Strep testing and urine collection

* Assures proper placement of EKG leads while obtaining 12 lead EKGS

* Proficient in HazMat decontamination procedures.

* Reports any abnormal vital signs, or changes noted in the patient?s condition to the primary nurse.

* Performs intentional hourly rounding and anticipates patient needs.

* Assists with admissions, transfers, and discharges to support patient throughput.

* Applies splinting and casting devices correctly and provides proper instruction to patient on care of each device

* Provide proper spinal immobilization

* Receives and responds to nurse delegation. Works with nurse to set priorities when receiving multiple requests

* Processes specimens, enters orders, maintain appropriate log and reports test results for procedures performed in the Mini Laboratory in ED

* IV Fluid-Assistive activities: Assemble/flush tubing during set-up; Insertion of peripheral I.V. with non-medicated fluid to keep line open; Insertion and maintain peripheral I.V. lock with normal saline; Discontinue peripheral intravenous infusions; Site care/dressing change; Performs Oxygen set up and accurately monitors flow rate; Performs sterile dressing changes on wounds less than 48 hours old; Maintains an awareness of pediatric, adult & geriatric developmental and emotional needs; Assists in preparation of patients going to OR or being transfer

Performs clerical activities

* Helps meet regulatory compliance standards; Refrigerator temps, track device day data, daily BCA checks, safety rounds, appropriate CHL audits.

* Makes sure fall risk patients have correct armbands and yellow socks, as well as correct signage and monitors bed alarm compliance.

* Maintains adequate paperwork concerning patient information (Patient logs, Patient Labels, Transfer/Admission logs) and communication with physician practices.

* Maintains proper inventory levels on all supplies and other items necessary for the operation of the department

* Assists in maintaining unit inventory of supplies, equipment, nourishments, and instruments and office supplies.

* Requests supplies from portable equipment

* Organizes assigned tasks and manages time so the work is completed within designated time frames.

* Promotes patient satisfaction through personal interaction.

* Assists with lost or left behind patient belongings.

* Reports patient status, patient/family concerns or unsafe conditions, as occur.

* Responds to call lights/intercom/telephones.

* Provides assistance/support to patients and significant others.

* Assists with room assignments, transfers and discharges.

* Collects non-controlled medications, distributing to appropriate licensed personnel on the unit.

* Observes Video Surveillance cameras

* Communicates regarding equipment maintenance and repairs.

* Assists with maintaining a clean and safe environment.

* Uses appropriate safety devices and techniques (examples: using safe lift equipment and needle safe devices; pushing carts; correctly lifting

* Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals (including compliance with Infection Prevention, Hand Hygiene, etc.).

* Identifies and reports safety hazards and incidents. Maintains secure areas per policy (carts, closets, etc.)

* Protects all confidential information and obeys all HIPAA regulations.

* Adheres to all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, including dress code.

* Documents time accurately using Kronos and not in corrective action for Kronos edits.

* Attends at least 50% of departmental staff meetings.

* Completes all departmentally required education, competencies, and/or proficiencies.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
Associates, Preferred in Emergency Preparedness Technology

High School Diploma or equivalent, Required

Must complete the ED department competency skills class for phlebotomy collections, ensuring specimen integrity and acceptability.

 

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 3 years, Healthcare - Paramedic, Required

A minimum of three years of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as a paramedic is required.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED

EMT | Emergency Medical Technician

NAI | Nursing Assistant I

NAII | Nursing Assistant II

BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider

ACLS | Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support

PALS | Pediatric Advanced Life Support

Current Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II certification along with CC EMT-P with a current NC certification.

Must be listed as a Nurse Aide I on the NC Division of Health Service Regulation-Nurse Aide I Registry

AHA ACLS, PALS, and BLS course completion required with up to date cards.

Must complete the ED department competency skills class for phlebotomy collections, ensuring specimen integrity and acceptability.
