Assists in the collection of data for identified CQI measures and assists in solving and changing practice associated with identified CQI related issues. -------------------------------------------------- Assists the patient and significant others in identifying and securing appropriate services and educational opportunities available to address health-related needs while providing emotional and psychological support to patients and family. (i.e.: Referrals, Consults, Lab and Radiology Services, Support Groups and teaching materials). -------------------------------------------------- Ensures appropriate equipment and accessories are available in the room for use in performing endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Prepares narcotics and sedatives used for moderate sedation. Maintains accurate record of narcotic and sedative use, including patient name, dose, ordering physician, administering nurse and wastage verification. Assists physician in the performance of endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract by providing ongoing monitoring of patient throughout the procedure; applying abdominal pressure and assisting with tissue sampling and removal of polyps during the examination as needed. Prepares and labels tissue specimens, completes pathology requisition and documents information regarding specimens in the chart, on the procedure log and on the pathology transport log. -------------------------------------------------- Interviews patient to obtain pertinent medical and surgical history, current medications, treatment plan and compliance with prescribed preparation for examination. Identifies needs based on knowledge of growth and development of adolescents, adults and geriatric patients. Ensures that history and review of systems is complete, that all necessary forms are signed by the patient and are present in the chart. Prepares patient for procedure. Assists patient as necessary to undress and don appropriate patient gown. Initiates intravenous fluids per standard protocol using appropriate technique and infection control measures. -------------------------------------------------- Maintains a safe environment and responds appropriately to emergencies and safety hazards. -------------------------------------------------- Performs ongoing assessment pre-, intra-, and post-procedure utilizing knowledge of basic EKG interpretation, appropriate methods of administration of moderate sedation, monitoring of patients receiving moderate or deep sedation and possible complication associated with the medications and the endoscopic procedure(s) performed. Consistently recognizes and acts upon subtle changes in patient status and implements interventions in a way that maintains patient dignity, privacy, confidentiality and safety. Defines measurable outcomes based on available data and ongoing evaluations of patient response to interventions (i.e. relief of abdominal distention post procedure, return of gag reflex, etc.). Identifies variances to expected outcomes and intervenes to optimize outcomes (i.e. excessive pain post-procedure ? intervention: pain medication, inability to relieve abdominal distention ? intervention: ambulate, Levsin per protocol). -------------------------------------------------- |
EDUCATION: |
Graduate of an approved nursing program. |
EXPERIENCE: |
1 year of professional nursing experience required. 1 year experience in a critical care setting, procedural area or PACU preferred. |
