Overview

ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY REQUIRED! 

 

This position is accountable to work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and assist in the various activities of the pharmacy department in order to provide quality patient care in a designated setting. Candidates have the ability to foster a top-tier employee engagement culture throughout Cone Health. This role requires advanced leadership qualities given their additional responsibility, competency assessment, and project assignments that go beyond the certified technician role.
A validating technician is permitted to validate only the following functions of other registered pharmacy technicians in filling floor stock and unit dose distribution systems for inpatients in the hospital.
(A) stocking of patient care unit medication inventories;
(B) stocking of ancillary drug cabinet inventories;
(C) stocking of automated dispensing or drug supply devices;
(D) stocking of emergency kits; and
(E) prepackaging of prescription drugs within the Hospital pharmacy.
With respect to compounded or admixed prescription drugs (whether sterile or non-sterile), a validating technician may validate the filling of floor stock and unit dose distribution systems only after a pharmacist has verified that the compounded or admixed prescription drugs have been prepared correctly.

Responsibilities

 

 
Validation: proficiently validates the following functions:
a. stocking of patient care unit medication inventories;
b. stocking of ancillary drug cabinet inventories;
c. stocking of automated dispensing or drug supply devices;
d. stocking of emergency kits;
e. prepackaging of prescription drugs within the Hospital pharmacy; and
f. serves as a subject matter expert in validation workflow.

Prepares, distributes and disposes of medications in compliance with current standards of practice under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Serves as a pharmacy technology resource to the department. Demonstrates ability to operate, troubleshoot, and resolve automation/technology issues.

In addition to patient care responsibilities, accepts and completes project assignments, performs ongoing audits, and assists with maintaining regulatory compliance on a routine basis according to departmental needs.

Maintains inventory in work areas and assists in procurement for weekend shortages.

Redirects workflow/resources during peak/low volumes and assists with scheduling of technicians while maintaining workflow and triaging phone calls

Trains and educates new and current employees and follows up to ensure competency of the team in pharmacy operation. Develops and revises competency documents/tools. Completes competency evaluation and provides appropriate feedback to leadership

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:

Required: Validating Technician shall be a pharmacy technician who holds one of the following:
(A) an associate's degree in pharmacy technology conferred by either an institution within the North Carolina Community College System; or
(B) an associate's degree in pharmacy technology conferred by an institution accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies recognized by the United States Department of Education; or
(C) an associate's degree in pharmacy technology conferred by a program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists

 

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Graduation from a properly credentialed associates degree program with associated intern hours
Preferred: Two (2) years of professional experience in progressively advanced technician roles and project leadership roles in healthcare or equivalent advanced education.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED:
Pharmacy technician certification through PTCB or NHA prior to hire
Registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire
PREFERRED:
Certification in Epic report writing
