Overview

 
The role of the CNS is that of clinical expert and leader within a specialty area of nursing practice. The CNS is expected to utilize their advanced knowledge and skills to influence the practice of nursing and to achieve quality outcomes for patients, families, groups, and communities. Key role components include application of clinical expertise, Evidence Based Practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring and transformational leadership. The CNS is expected to operate within the three spheres of influence as outlined by the national organization; 1) patient/family, 2) nurses and nursing practice, and 3) organization/system. In collaboration with nursing and members of the health care team, the CNS assumes a leadership role to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies that support the triple aim goals of Cone Health.

Responsibilities

 

 
Patient Care Sphere (includes individual(s) and family, groups, and/or populations) - Provides and facilitates the latest evidence supporting cost-effective, safe nursing practices. Collaborates with the health care team to promote a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family. Identifies, designs, prioritizes, and/or evaluates patient care opportunities for a specialty population. Conducts comprehensive, holistic assessments for specialty population using innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, and methods. Evaluates impact of nursing interventions on quality, cost and service.

Nursing/Nursing Practice Sphere - Collaborates with others to promote opportunities for the improvement of patient care, communication, policies, and resources. Develops and revises clinical policies, and procedures using evidence-based information. Leads clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives for specialty area. Creates and supports a practice environment that is conducive to continuous self-learning and critical thinking, demonstration of responsibility and accountability, and effective incorporation of evidence into practice. Collaborates with others on content and design of educational programs. Provides formal and informal education for health professionals. Facilitates in the conduction and utilization of nursing research.

Organization/System Leadership Sphere - Consults, leads, and/or assists multidisciplinary teams to enhance clinical practice and improve patient outcomes across the continuum of care. Designs, participates and/or evaluates programs and initiatives congruent with the organizations strategic plans. Participates in identification, selection, implementation and evaluation of products and equipment. Advances nursing practice through participation in professional organizations, networking, publications, and presentations.

Establishes a caring and therapeutic nurse/healthcare team/patient/significant other relationships. Recognizes communication barriers, identifies resources and establishes plans to resolve barriers to communication. Demonstrates respect for ethnicity, gender, religion, socioeconomics, education, personality, or other unique variable. Formulate individualized plans to address individual needs related to diversity, cultural difference or other unique variables. Advocates for the patient/significant other. Demonstrates skillful responses to customer needs based on particular context of the situation.

Demonstrates personal accountability and effective conflict resolution/negotiation skills. Demonstrates appropriate use of universal precautions use of personal protective equipment. Maintains safe environment and responds appropriately to emergencies and safety hazards. Promotes a positive, supportive, and professional work environment free of disruptive behavior. Practices, in all professional relationships with compassion and respect for inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual. Follow Chain of Command for assistance with issues related to unresolved/problem-solving and or/conflict resolution. Provides, seeks and received constructive feedback. Provides peer to peer feedback and seeks mediation as necessary. Demonstrates expertise in collaboration, negotiation, and conflict management.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
Required - Graduate degree. MSN required in nursing with a clinical focus.
Preferred - Doctorate

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Must have minimum of 3 years experience as a RN, with 2 years of experience in specialty area. Able to demonstrate expertise in specialty area. Must be recognized by the North Carolina Board of Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialty. Will consider those in progress for Board recognition (must be completed within 3 years of hire).
Preferred: 5 years of experience as a RN. Certification in area of clinical specialty.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
Current/active license to practice nursing in the State of North Carolina National Certification.
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider , recognized by North Carolina Board of Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Will consider those in progress for Board recognition (must be completed within 3 years of hire).
PREFERRED: Certification in area of clinical specialty
