Overview

 

Applies educational theories, principles, and innovative strategies to advance clinical practice and job performance in an effective and efficient manner. Plans and implements educational programs based on quality improvement outcomes and joint planning. Coordinates education resources and serves as a leader for assigned departments/programs. This position serves the following patient age categories: neonatal, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Provides counseling, coaching and guidance for employees and makes referrals as needed.

Responsibilities

 

 
Develops and coordinates educational programs that supports the development of skills and competencies of staff/employees to provide patient care. Provides primary leadership for format and implementation of student/staff education. Ensures curriculum meets regulatory requirements as applicable and updates as regulations change. Assists staff/preceptors in developing coaching, mentoring and precepting skills. Collaborates with educators, preceptors and leadership to evaluate clinical performance and determine action plan when necessary. Encourages the individual learner/student's development through coaching, mentoring, evaluation and career advisement. Works with departments to provide quality clinical experiences.

Develops, implements and evaluates staff and patient educational activities congruent with system educational needs and priorities. Designs methods for assessing learning needs. Provides primary leadership for planning and implementing of staff and patient education in collaboration with department Directors and staff that meets identified learning needs. Utilizes a systematic leadership approach to evaluate the effectiveness of educational offerings and takes action to improve coordination, content and delivery. Provides primary leadership in development, implementation and evaluation of competency-based orientation for professional and nonprofessional staff. Works with educational institutions to provide quality clinical rotations for students. Participates as a team member to accomplish education department and organizational goals.

Demonstrates personal accountability. Maintains and shares knowledge of clinical practice, issues, trends and technology. Participates in and provides leadership for meetings, task forces and committees; completes assignments per/ahead of schedule. Directs and leads staff to focus on and achieve patient satisfaction. When personally instructing, presentations are thoroughly prepared, clearly and concisely communicated and incorporates the principles of Adult Learning. Demonstrates appropriate use of universal precautions and personal protective equipment. Demonstrates relevant department competencies. Maintains current licensure.

Serves as a leader in education. Serves as a change agent by demonstrating ability to embrace change and ability to manage individual and group response to change through education. Collaborates with staff and other leaders to develop/maintain a work environment that supports ongoing learning and staff development. Assists the organization in meeting its goals and objectives by actively participating in or leading interdisciplinary committees and activities as requested. Demonstrates resource management skills by inservice budget planning, time management skills and seeking innovative methods of increasing staff's knowledge and skills. Provides staff development through the use of mentoring, coaching, and counseling techniques that includes giving and receiving feedback, consultation and development of individualized learning plans for staff. Role models leader behaviors that includes open and supportive communication, risk taking that supports organizational objectives, conflict resolution in a manner that develops trust with others, and takes responsibility for actions.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
Bachelors, Nursing, Required
Masters degree preferred in Nursing; a Master?s Degree in Education, or a Master?s Degree in a health related field with certification in a nursing specialty will be considered in lieu of a Masters in Nursing

 

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum three years RN clinical practice required. Five years RN clinical practice in acute care preferred.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
RN | Registered Nurse licensed in North Carolina or a Compact state.
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Certification required in a clinical specialty as defined by National Certification requirements within two (2) years of hire into Nursing Professional Development Specialist I position.
PREFERRED
ACLS | Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
PALS | Pediatric Advanced Life Support
