Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant provides team based patient care as directed by the Physician. They
provide support to nursing, lab, clerical, and Physician staff in order to facilitate positive patient
outcomes. Clinical knowledge and skills relate to newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric
populations.
**Participation in a Clinical Orientation and Competency Evaluation, and ability to pass a Clinical Skills Assessment and Medication Administration test within ninety (90) days of hire, and within 3 attempts.**

Responsibilities


Under the direction of an MD, provides patient care appropriate to the needs of patients undergoing endoscopic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract. Assists with schedule assessment to determine when a patient should be brought into the admissions area for preparation maintaining a timely flow of patients. Obtains baseline vital signs [BP,P,O2 saturation and temperature] and reports abnormalties to nursing staff and/or physician. Performs CBG testing as needed for diabetic patients and reports abnormalities to nursing staff and/or physician. Instructs patients in how to undress and put on patient gown as well as assisting patients with dressing prior to discharge. Assists in patient chart preparation for next day•s schedule. Monitors telephone notes, returns patient calls to answer questions related to preparation or consults physicians or nurses about what the patient should do in the event of developing fever or other changes in medical conditions prior to the scheduled procedure, assists with calling patients from the previous day. Assists as needed with transporting patients for discharge or lab visits prior to discharge. Assists with scheduling patient appointments prior to discharge and/or instructing patients for scheduled tests or procedures.

Demonstrates proficiency in the operation of: (and appropriate documentation of maintenance as required). EPIC: HealthLink (Schedule/Cancel/Reschedule procedures or appointments; Print Daily Schedules, Access labs, procedure reports, patient communications, etc. needed for patient care). Datascope Patient Monitors (Non-invasive BP, Pulse, Respiration and PSAO2). Glucometer (applies appropriate methods for quality & patient testing). Tympanic Thermometer (uses disposable ear probe covers, uses appropriate technique to obtain patient temperature). Telephone System (Answering, Transferring and Routing Calls, Also aware of Emergency Designations and Numbers). Facsimile Machine (able to FAX medical information to consulting physicians as needed). Defibrillator (Crash Cart and knowledge of drugs supplied on cart, endotracheal tubes and laryngoscope). Eye Wash Station (able to demonstrate proper use).

Able to demonstrate basic knowledge of the endoscopic GI procedures performed in the center and appropriate patient preparation instructions for the procedures. (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, Colonoscopy, Dilation, Injection of Hemorrhoids)

Demonstrates Personal Accountability. Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner and keeps appropriate persons informed of progress and/or problems. Demonstrates appropriate use of universal precautions and use of personal protective equipment. Maintains safe environment and responds appropriately to emergencies and safety hazards. Completes mandatory education: Fire/Safety (yearly Safety at Work - CBL); Blood Borne Pathogens (Yearly Safety at Work - CBL); Falls Prevention (Yearly Safety at Work • CBL); Domestic Violence; Age Specific Competencies; Nova Glucometer Competency; Maintains current certification in Medical Assisting; Obtains TB screening / testing per required schedule; Obtains Flu Shot per required schedule.

Qualifications


EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent, Required
Medical assistant program preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
2, Healthcare - Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Preferred
Physician office experience preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Required:
Current and active certification as a medical assistant by one of the following: American Allied Health (AAH), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).
