Overview

Responsible for handling, performing, evaluating and releasing results on blood bank laboratory specimens received for analysis. Includes performing all requirements relating to specimens and generating accurate, timely results and reporting.

Responsibilities


Completes required annual competencies for blood bank test systems by specified due date. Complies with all regulatory standards and maintains a working knowledge of the standards. Maintains knowledge of, demonstrates, and adheres to hospital and laboratory safety and compliance policies and procedures.

Demonstrates effective problem solving skills in blood bank and assists others to do the same. Demonstrates continual learning and assists others.

Maintains and troubleshoots complex blood bank instrumentation and blood bank test systems in accordance with established policies and procedures. Ensures corrective action completed and documented according to procedure prior to release of any testing results.

Performs all processes associated with testing of laboratory blood bank specimens (pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical) on test systems according to established blood bank laboratory policies and procedures.

Performs and analyzes quality control materials. Performs quality assurance activities to ensure accuracy of specimen testing and reporting.

Practices effective and efficient use of blood bank supplies and reagents and actively participates in inventory control.

Prioritizes assigned duties and workload in blood bank to ensure completion meets established laboratory turnaround times.

Qualifications


EDUCATION:
Required: MLT(ASCP) certification, AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics,
AND two years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., Canada or a an accredited laboratory (CMS CLIA certificate or registration, compliance accreditation) within the last four years.
Preferred: Bachelor?s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.

EXPERIENCE:
Preferred: Six months minimum experience as a technical generalist.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification or equivalent certification.
