Overview

This position is primarily responsible for processing physician orders for laboratory testing through both the practice and laboratory information systems, as well as obtaining and handling patient specimens. In addition, this position will provide appropriate organizational, data collection and clerical support to the Laboratory Manager in the form of maintenance of specially required reporting or logs, other analysis and organizational efforts that may be undertaken.
This position requires the delivery of excellent customer service utilizing Relationship Based Care to advocate for safety, patient preferences, and optimal communication through partnering with patients/ families and colleagues, including all internal and external customers.

Responsibilities


Collect specimens from patients by using correct finger stick, heelstick and/or venipuncture technique for blood; Collect throat culture specimens using correct technique; Perform therapeutic phlebotomies per protocol; Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories including but not limited to specimen preparation by using centrifuge to separate blood cells from plasma or serum specimens if applicable, completion or inclusion of associated paperwork, including requisitions and manifests; and packaging for pickup or mailing; obtains clarification of specimen handling requirements from respective reference laboratory source.

Greet patients in a professional manner with a smile, using AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explain, thank you) technique; avoid opportunity for patient complaint; Maintain confidentiality; Properly identify patients and patient specimens; label patient specimens following proper labeling protocol to ensure integrity of patient identification and efficient, cost effective test processing; Exercise appropriate judgment in processing individual patients; know when to advance a patient before other patients.

Provide verbal and written instructions to patients for the collection of fecal, sputum and urine specimens; Communicate special information to the patient appropriately according to age and listening abilities (e.g., aftercare of venipuncture site, specimen collection instructions, etc.).

"Process laboratory orders accurately, proficiently and cost effectively using the appropriate computer system; use available resources to determine or ensure accuracy of orders (I.e., tests, codes, etc.); utilize downtime backup (manual) protocols when necessary; Release specimen orders from EPIC system into Orchard Harvest system; release specimen orders in Orchard Harvest from off sites promptly on receipt from courier; record rejected specimens per protocol; Promptly Notify technical staff of STAT specimen requests verbally, flag specimen(s) with STAT label and edit the Priority of the specimen(s) in

Answer telephone calls using professional telephone etiquette while smiling; take messages accurately, route calls and/or messages to appropriate member of the medical or laboratory staff in a timely manner; Route incoming test results, catalogs, brochures or other information sent from the reference laboratory to the proper recipient.

Maintain work areas in a neat, orderly and clean manner; disinfect laboratory equipment, bench space as necessary and draw chairs after each patient; Maintain stocked work area; inventory and requisition phlebotomy area supplies as needed.

Demonstrate the ability to handle problem situations appropriately (i.e., difficult veins, challenging personalities, fainting, etc.); document issues outside of normal routine per protocol in the MCHS Safety Portal; Notify the Laboratory Manager promptly of risk, safety and/or infection prevention issues/occurrences such as but not limited to patient exposure, needle sticks, fainting, patient complaints, etc. and report occurrences/incidents in the MCHS Safety Portal; Employ safe work practices, wear appropriate protective apparel, exercise proper care of equipment, adhere to strict hand sanitizing protocol and to written policies and procedures for all tasks; sanitize hands between patients.

Work closely with other staff to identify trends and quality issues and to recommend service improvements; Provide appropriate guidance and support to departmental personnel in terms of proper use of EPIC registration/scheduling process, order/entry of laboratory tests, specimen processing and pertinent patient and/or specimen information in relation not only to LeBauer HealthCare Laboratory but also with respective reference laboratories;; Contribute in a professional manner to meetings in discussions of ongoing trends and issues regarding the administration of patient registration and order/entry activities

Support the activities of the system administrators (i.e., the Laboratory Manager and other Laboratory Services personnel, etc.) in regards to patient care and quality enhancement duties and responsibilities; Continuous review of laboratory policies and procedures related to scope of job functions; Assist with the conduction of audits, reviews, information gathering for quality improvement studies and produce reports as requested.

Qualifications


EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent, Required

EXPERIENCE:
1 year, Required
1 year as a phlebotomist in a hospital or physician office required
2 years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital or physician office preferred

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED
BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
Current Phlebotomy licensure from one of the following approved agencies:
ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology)
OR
ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians)
OR
NHA (National Healthcareer Association)
OR
AMT (American Medical Technologists)
