Overview

 
The Histotechnician Non Certified receives, processes, and prepares patient tissue specimens and slides for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist. Working under general supervision, this role is responsible for coordinating daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area with regard to routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule. This role serves as a resource to providers to place appropriate testing orders and handling of excised tissues.

Responsibilities

 

 
Performs difficult, routine technical procedures, including cutting, embedding, staining, special stains, and frozen sections, while upholding high-quality standards and meeting established benchmarks to ensure quantity and accuracy of specimens.
Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and records in pathology log to ensure timely processing and accurate tracking of specimens in the pathology laboratory.
Detects problems and documents issues, forwarding them to the manager for resolution to ensure smooth laboratory operations and minimize potential disruptions in the diagnostic process.
Performs and monitors inventory of pathology supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required to ensure an uninterrupted workflow for timely and reliable diagnostic results.
Monitors pathology equipment functionality, performs maintenance, and conducts quality control procedures as required to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
Contributes to College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection preparedness by fulfilling assigned tasks with quality to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and facilitate a smooth inspection process.
Collaborates effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to promoting seamless communication and teamwork to facilitate accurate diagnoses and enhance patient care outcomes.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: 5 years experience in a histopathology laboratory setting
