Overview

 

The Certified Medical Assistant provides team based patient care as directed by the Physician. They

provide support to nursing, lab, clerical, and Physician staff in order to facilitate positive patient

outcomes. Clinical knowledge and skills relate to newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric

populations. The Bilingual CMA will serve the English and Spanish (or other designated language) speaking populations.

Responsibilities

 

 
Greet patients and visitors upon arrival. Screens visitors and responds to requests for information. Check in patients arriving for appointments. Verify and update demographic information and insurance in EPIC computer system. Instruct patients on payment policy and legal issues regarding guardianship. Provide patients with HIPPA privacy policy information. Assist with medical records tasks within the EMR system, only referencing hard copy records as requested. Ensure the waiting area is clean and orderly throughout the day for patients. Shipments and deliveries ? follows the shipments protocol (medications, packages, orders). Maintain strict confidentiality of all medical information. Attend mandatory in-service education programs and participate in appropriate staff development programs. Collects co pays and over the counter payments upon patient arrival. k. Schedules return appointments for patients when necessary and anticipates special needs.

Answer incoming calls in a timely manner and routing them appropriately. Routes urgent calls according to established protocol. Communicates general clinic information. Responsible for reporting telephone system problems to the Practice Manager in a timely manner. Makes changes and updates information in telephone directory. Schedule appointment requests from patients (via telephone and website) and hospital providers according to and department guidelines. Consider time allotment per appointment. Obtain Medicaid Carolina Access authorizations as appropriate. Prepare letters for patients who no-show their appointments. Perform reminder calls for patient that need an upcoming appointment. Perform reminder calls for patient that have an upcoming appointment.

Scan all incoming correspondence into the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) chart. Maintain strict confidentiality of all medical information. Document all incoming and outgoing medical record requests.Ensure proper ROI obtained prior to releasing any medical records. Monitor all incoming fax transmissions and routes it appropriately.

Collects vital signs, history, medication information, and additional information necessary to provide a complete examination and treatment of patient. Observes, records, and report patient condition and reaction to drugs and treatment to provider. Communicates patient questions, and concerns to nursing staff and provider. Administers prescribed medications and enters prescriptions as directed, refills medications per office protocol, obtains samples of medications, and follows up on requests for indigent medications. Assists with the preparation of equipment, exam rooms, and laundry. Restocking examination areas as necessary. Cleaning rooms weekly. Oversees appointment bookings, ensuring preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Maintains timely flow of patients. Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls, (including giving test results) giving preference to patients in emergency situations. Communicates patient condition, questions, and concerns to nursing staff and physician in order to triage and respond to messages appropriately. Assists with scheduling patient appointments, tests, admissions and follow-through with physician orders. Instructs patient in collection of samples and tests. Communicates and responds appropriately to team member requests and/or concerns. Provides support for other staff members. Obtain prior authorization and pre-certifications for testing, referrals, orders and medications. Responsible for chart preparation.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent, General Studies, Required

Medical assistant program preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:
Physician office experience preferred.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED

BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider

Required:

Current and active certification as a medical assistant by one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).
