Provide assessment services (including evaluation, consultation and/or referral) for patients presenting with a psychiatric or substance abuse issue in the emergency department or Behavioral Health. This position serves the adult, geriatric, child and adolescent population.

Talent Pool: Allied Health


Makes a timely assessment of patients who present with behavioral health needs either in the ED (report from BHH within 30mins) or at BHH. Via face to face or tele-assessment.


Conduct a behavioral health assessment, determining the level of care that is in the best interest of the patient.


Generating/ completing all paperwork necessary for a thorough disposition. Including appropriate releases, outside referrals, inpatient admission, either voluntarily or in some cases recommending to the physician, involuntary commitment.


Consulting with physicians in the evaluation of psychiatric and/or substance abuse patients, contacting collateral's as necessary, making dispositions that are in the best interest of the patient.


Assist Registration Department with needed clinical data for pre-certification necessary to admit a patient to BHC or IOP programs


Maintains all records required by the ED's/BHH where the assessment is done making the required copies for the state commitment forms and the local contracted mental health centers.


Acts as a public relation conduit suggesting appropriate referral processes to potential referrals.


Collaborates effectively with the health care team.


Demonstrates effective verbal/nonverbal/written communication with the healthcare team/patient and significant others. Accurately maintain logs and other office paperwork.


Maintains a positive team attitude wherever the counselor is required to do an assessment and act within the scope of practice required by their respective licenses.



Graduate of a master's degree program in an counseling or related field required by the specific licensure board.

1 year, Healthcare - Psychiatry, Required

A licensed provider with at least 1 year of counseling, crisis intervention or psychiatric experience.


N.C. provisional license in one of the following: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) or licensed psychologist. Must obtain full licensure in one of the above categories within 3 years from start date as Triage Specialist.

Acquires Crisis Intervention Response Techniques (CIRT) certification prior to patient care assignment and maintains on an annual basis.

BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider training prior to completion of orientation.


N.C. licensed LPC, LMFT, LCSW, LCAS or licensed psychologist preferred.
