Overview

Performs specific duties relating to the geriatric and orthopedic population and environment, reporting observations to the licensed nurse.

Responsibilities


Considers each resident's physical limitations and developmental level of functioning, providing special attention or special accommodations: Assists, moves and ambulates patients, using proper knowledge of body mechanics.

Delivers and assists with supplemental feedings, snacks or nourishment's.

--------------------------------------------------

Develops and maintains supportive, nurturing relationships with residents and their families to facilitate excellent care and quality of life based upon expressed and observed needs. Sensitive to psychosocial needs related to life changes (disabling illness, severe mental impairment, depression, grief, etc.)

Keeps licensed staff informed of all responsibilities on an ongoing basis, ensuring prompt notification in the event of a problem or potential problem.

Knows and follows all precautions for orthopedic patients (i.e., weight-bearing status, proper number of staff required for assists), and keeps abreast of changes in status through discharge.

Monitors patients a minimum of every two (2) hours, without exception, for turning, changing, elimination, identification of needs, etc.

Organizes assigned tasks and manages time so that work is completed within designated time frames.

--------------------------------------------------

Participants in meeting patient's nutritional needs, in a timely manner: Prepares residents for meals and assists with feeding as indicated. Knowledgeable of precautions for residents with G-tubes, signs of aspiration and proper consistency of nourishment provided. Utilizes coaching techniques to encourage eating. Exercises patient (knows how to pace feeding).

Performs clinical aspects of patient care, in accordance with prescribed procedures and techniques, and unit competencies: Takes and accurately records vital signs, (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, heights and weights) applies ace bandages and binders, reports changes to nurse in charge and performs post mortem care.

Uses mechanical devices correctly and when needed (Hoyer lift, shower lift, scales, tub use).

Qualifications


EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent, Required

EXPERIENCE:
Preferred: NAI experience in a geriatric and/or healthcare facility environment with a total care orientation.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
REQUIRED

NAI | Nurse Aid I

BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
