The SW-Emergency Preparedness Specialist is responsible for understanding the threats and vulnerabilities within our community and hospital that may negatively impact hospital operations or pose a risk to staff, patients and the community at large. The Specialist assist with the develop plans and train staffs on emergency procedures that will help mitigate, prepare, respond and recover from any disaster. The Specialist will work under the coordination of the SW-Emergency Management coordinator and alongside other Emergency Management staff and several multi-disciplinary teams within the Moses Cone Health System. This position will be given primary responsibility for two facilities but will also provide system-wide support and on-call coverage.

As a team member of the SW-Emergency Management Department, use the Hazard Vulnerability Process, determine what the most likely hazards our System and facilities face and then focus the emergency plans around those likely hazards.


Assist with all logistical components of the health system's disaster / emergency management equipment inventory. Including the administration of all communication equipment and the appropriate FCC compliance. Assure the equipment is stays in good working order and is exercised as required. Maintain a strong working proficiency in operation/deployment of all EM equipment inventory and communications/network equipment.


As a team member of the SW-Emergency Management Department, respond to requests for assistance from staff and leadership during or in preparation of panned events and disasters. Communicate with staff and leadership professionally and accurately with input and guidance for preparations, response, and recovery from emergency situations. Serve as a SME in areas of Emergency Management and aspects of preparedness, response and recovery as well as system EOP.


In coordination with the SW-Emergency Management Coordinator ensuring all JCAHO guidelines for Environment of Care Emergency preparedness standards are communicated and met. Work with the Accreditation Coordinator to ensure that all departments are provided information on JCAHO Emergency Preparedness Environment Care standards and monitor compliance to these standards. Assist with monitoring and compliance with all other regulatory agencies to assure compliance with emergency management/preparedness standards.


For assigned facilities, orchestrate the execution of a minimum of one Hospital-wide/System wide Emergency Preparedness functional or full scale exercise per year. Actively participate in all additional facility and system wide exercises conducted as requested by SW-Emergency Management Coordinator.


As a team member of the SW-Emergency Management Department, support the implementation and on-going education and use of the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS) throughout the organization, including supporting the following responsibility areas: Security and Safety, Communications, Training, Operations, Logistics, Planning, and Finance during activation. Serve as a subject matter expert in EOC & Command Center Management and operations as well as HEICS during all levels of emergency activation.


As requested by the SW-Emergency Management Coordinator, participate with internal and external task forces, committees, and agencies regarding emergency preparedness including those at the hospital, local, regional, and state levels. Reporting outcomes, decisions, recommendations to Administration and appropriate sub-committees. Participate in assigned facility committees and sub-committees as they relate to Emergency Management or projects as a SME for the committee. Participate in all system wide Emergency Management committee meetings and any assigned facility specific Emergency Management Committee or EOC committee meetings.


Investigate, research, and make recommendations regarding best practices with respect to emergency preparedness. Attend seminars, benchmark with other institutions to identify system and operational problems and propose solutions. Participates in local and regional health care improvement initiatives. Continuously seek learning and educational opportunities for personal and professional development in the areas of Emergency Management.


At assigned facilities assist the Emergency Department leadership in the design, coordination, and implementation of emergency preparedness plans, procedures and training (for internal and external events). In consultation with ED Leadership and SW-Emergency Management Coordinator, design and update the Emergency Department's response to both external and internal events.


Complete assigned projects from the SW-Emergency Management Coordinator onetime and within budget constraints. Provide assistance as needed to other team members with projects and special requests and promote the Emergency Management profession through the system and community in positive image. Be a good steward of the Moses Cone Health System facilities and maintain compliance with corporate requirements.

Required: 3 years in emergency services or emergency management field

Preferred: 5+ years? experience in emergency services or emergency management.

3+ years? hospital emergency preparedness experience
