Provides assistive patient care in the Operating Room under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. This position serves the following patient age categories: neonatal, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Level III is an advanced practitioner who has met all of Level II criteria, demonstrates strong leadership abilities, and is involved in staff education and committees; acting as a liaison between all members of the multi-disciplinary team. Considered a campus resource (constantly seeks out opportunity for improvement, service specific).

Assists with the surgical process. Demonstrates table set ups and scrub techniques for complex procedures. Identifies instruments, checks equipment, and obtains supplies as relates to procedures and proactively make changes according to patient needs. Maintains asepsis throughout procedure; identifies and corrects breaks in technique. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology as related to basic and complex procedures. Demonstrates safety practices as related to counts, sharps, positioning, specimens, and ESU's. Educates peer group. Collaborates with Surgical Tech IV to disseminate information to surgical teams.


Collaboration with the entire surgical team. Verifies selected data about the health status of the patient with the circulating nurse. Observes patient and alerts surgical team to symptoms, reactions, and changes in patient's condition. Assists the RN with selected patient care interventions in a manner that is consistent with policies and procedures. Consults physician about needs/requirements preoperatively and postoperatively. Advanced knowledge of patient care. Education - able to articulate and deliver an education plan.


Contributes to unit operations. Identifies needs for changes in preference lists. Actively participates in quality assurance and improvement activities. Takes opportunities to broaden scope of practice within their specialty. Proactively seeks out opportunities to manage resources efficiently and works with team members to reduce costs and improve quality. Completes assigned task without prompting and seeks other departmental needs.


Demonstrates Professional accountability. Teach service specific competencies. Assists in holding surgical team accountable for assuring universal precautions are maintained. Demonstrates and enforces adherence to established dress code. Completes mandatory requirements: maintains current CPR and obtains TB testing per schedule





High School diploma or equivalent, plus

Graduate of a School of Surgical Technology or equivalent military

training with surgical technologist experience.


Minimum 1 year in Surgical Technology field, Required



BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider

CST Certified Surgical Technologist. Certifications should come from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

60 CEUs/4 years for the CST
